Ericsson Leverages OPNET Modeler to Develop
MPLS/QoS Mechanisms for 3G Wireless Access Networks
Ericsson is ensuring its leading position in the development
of 3G access routers by incorporating OPNET Modeler into their
Research process.
Ericsson is using OPNET Modeler to design MPLS capabilities
incorporating IntServ/DiffServ mechanisms into their 3G network
equipment. Yves Lemieux, the lead engineer on Ericsson's work
with OPNET, has been enhancing current DiffServ mechanisms. OPNET
software shortens Ericsson's Research process by eliminating
mistakes early on, rather than during a hardware prototype phase,
reducing the number of design iterations required. OPNET Modeler
was also used to design MPLS Fast Reroute mechanisms to ensure
QoS under network failure conditions. According to Mr. Lemieux, "At
Ericsson Research in Canada, OPNET software is most useful for
accelerating our proof-of-concept projects. We regularly reduce
time for completing these projects by 30% of what they would
take otherwise, and we are also more confident in our results
because of the structure OPNET Modeler introduces."
Mr. Lemieux continued, "Most recently OPNET Modeler validated
that our product designs implement required QoS mechanisms in
the wireless network, to provide differentiated data services...
and we believe we can do these projects faster and better than
the competition."
